If your furnace is over ten years old, now is the time to upgrade to one that is substantially more efficient. The builder’s grade equipment your home came with may only be 60 to 70 percent efficient. The new equipment has a much higher AFUE rating. The definition of AFUE is Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency.

Heating systems consume approximately 35% to 50% of a typical homes energy budget. The federal government has come up with a way to measure efficiencies of furnaces so the can set a standard for minimum efficiencies.  AFUE is a rating that reflects how efficient a gas furnace converts fuel to energy.

A new Gwinnett gas furnace with an AFUE of 95 means that approximately 95 percent of the fuel is utilized to provide warmth to your home, while the remaining 5% goes up the flue vent. Your current system looses as much as 45% of the heat up the flue.
